Drug interactions involving Coumadin

We recently settled a case involving the interaction of Coumadin with Ibuprofen. Our client was a resident in a nursing home, where she was recuperating from a pulmonary embolism. She was expected to leave the nursing home and go back home after a few weeks of rehabilitation. Prior to being transferred from a hospital to the nursing home she was placed on Coumadin, an anticoagulant (sometimes called a “blood thinner.”} In order to treat musculoskeletal pain, she was prescribed Ibuprofen by the nursing home doctor. After being given Ibuprofen, she suffered significant intestinal bleeding. This required her to go back to the hospital, where she spent underwent multiple procedures and time in the ICU. She was then transferred to another nursing home, where she spent the final months of her life essentially bedbound.
